Whether you commute by metro or drive daily, transport costs in the UAE changed materially in 2026 — Salik moved to time-of-day pricing and added VAT. For a lot of commutes, that flipped the answer to which option is cheaper.
Commute Cost Checker
Metro or drive — your monthly number
Both tables assume 22 working days a month and a return trip each day.
If you take the metro
| Zones crossed each way | Per day (return) | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| 1 zone, Silver | 6.00 | 132 |
| 2 zones, Silver | 10.00 | 220 |
| 3+ zones, Silver | 14.00 (daily cap) | 308 |
| 3+ zones, Gold cabin | 20.00 (daily cap) | 440 |
The daily cap is what makes long journeys cheap — a 3-zone return would be AED 15 unmetered, but caps at 14, and every further ride that day is free.
If you drive — Salik alone
| Gates crossed each way | Peak, per day | Peak, per month | Off-peak, per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 gate | 12.60 | 277 | 185 |
| 2 gates | 25.20 | 554 | 370 |
| 3 gates | 37.80 | 832 | 554 |
Tolls only. Fuel, parking, insurance, servicing and depreciation sit on top of every figure in this table.
The comparison that matters: a two-gate peak commute costs AED 554 a month in tolls alone, against AED 308 for an unlimited Silver Nol commute across any distance. That’s roughly 80% more before you’ve bought a litre of fuel or paid for parking.
Shifting your hours — what it saves
On a two-gate commute, moving both legs out of peak takes you from AED 554 to AED 370 a month — a saving of about AED 184 a month, or AED 2,200 a year, for leaving earlier and staying later. Crossing before 6am is free entirely, and Sundays are a flat AED 4 all day. If your employer is flexible on hours, this is the cheapest change you can make.
Cheaper rent further out — does it actually pay?
A flat AED 8,000 a year cheaper looks like a clear win. But if it adds two Salik gates each way at peak, that’s AED 6,650 a year in tolls alone, before fuel and the extra hour a day. Run this calculation before you sign, not after. See Rent & Tenant Rights.
Dubai Metro: Nol card fares
Dubai’s transport network is divided into 7 zones, and fares depend on how many zones your journey crosses — not distance or number of stops.
| Card type | 1 zone | 2 zones | 3+ zones | Daily cap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silver (standard) | AED 3 | AED 5 | AED 7.50 | AED 14 |
| Gold (premium cabin) | AED 6 | AED 10 | AED 15 | AED 20 |
| Blue (student/senior, 50% off) | AED 1.50 | AED 2.50 | AED 3.75 | — |
A Silver Nol card costs AED 25 to buy, of which AED 19 is usable credit and AED 6 is the card fee. It works across metro, tram, RTA buses and water buses — cash isn’t accepted on board any of them.
Salik: what changed in 2026
Salik moved from a flat AED 4 per gate to dynamic pricing by time of day, with 5% VAT added from June 2026.
- Peak (6–10am and 4–8pm, Monday to Saturday): AED 6.30 with VAT
- Off-peak (10am–4pm and 8pm–1am): AED 4.20 with VAT
- Free: 1am–6am daily
- Sundays: flat AED 4 all day, excluding public holidays
Taxis
RTA-regulated rates: flagfall from AED 5 (higher at night), roughly AED 2.19 per km (adjusted monthly with fuel prices), plus an AED 25 airport pickup surcharge and any Salik gates crossed en route. A typical 15km trip runs roughly AED 40–45. App-booked rides add a small booking fee on top.
Abu Dhabi: a different system entirely
Abu Dhabi has no Salik-style toll. Buses run on the Hafilat card, which is not interchangeable with Nol. Hafilat fares are AED 2 boarding plus 5 fils per km within the city, capped at AED 5 per journey, or a weekly pass at AED 30 for unlimited city travel. Darb, Abu Dhabi’s separate toll system, applies to driving onto Abu Dhabi island on weekday mornings.
Common questions
Does the daily cap cover buses and trams too?
Yes — the cap applies across the RTA network, so metro, tram, bus and water bus journeys all count toward the same daily ceiling. Once you hit it, everything else that day is free, which is why a multi-leg commute rarely costs more than a simple one.
Is the Gold cabin worth AED 132 a month more?
That’s the difference between the Silver and Gold monthly caps on a long commute. It buys you a seat during rush hour on the busiest lines, which some people value highly and others not at all. Try Silver first for a fortnight before committing — your line and your timing matter more than the price does.
Can I use my Nol card in Abu Dhabi or Sharjah?
No. Nol is Dubai’s RTA network. Abu Dhabi uses Hafilat, and other emirates run their own arrangements. If you commute across emirate lines, budget for both.
Do I pay Salik when I take a taxi?
Yes — any gates crossed during your trip are added to the fare. On a route with two or three gates that’s a meaningful addition to a AED 40 journey, and it’s the reason two trips of similar distance can bill very differently.
Last verified 28 August 2026. Salik’s dynamic pricing is new as of mid-2026 and taxi rates adjust monthly with fuel prices. Nol is also mid-overhaul to account-based ticketing — current fares are unaffected, but expect visible changes at gates over the coming months. Monthly figures above assume 22 working days and a standard commute pattern.
