How to Get a SIM Card in the UAE: Age Limit, Documents and the Under-18 Route (2026)

Last updated

Short version: you must be 18 or older to register a SIM card in your own name in the UAE. If you are under 18, the line is registered to a parent or legal guardian’s Emirates ID and handed to you, and two operators sell plans built for exactly that. Tourists need only a passport with an entry stamp. Residents need an Emirates ID.

Which SIM route applies to you?

Tap two answers. Nothing is sent anywhere.

1. Age of the person who will use the SIM
2. Their status in the UAE

What is the age limit for a SIM card in the UAE?

18. Every mobile line in the UAE is tied to an identity document and verified through the telecoms regulator, TDRA. Operators will only register a line to an adult, so a 15, 16 or 17-year-old cannot walk into an e&, du or Virgin Mobile shop and buy one on their own ID, even if they hold a residence visa and an Emirates ID.

The rule exists because the registered owner is responsible for everything done on the number. That is also why a parent should never lend their own main number to a teenager: bank OTPs, government logins and UAE Pass all point to it.

Under 18? How to get a SIM anyway

The legal route is for a parent or guardian to register the line in their name and give it to the child. Two operators package this as a dedicated product:

How to get ite& UAE app or an e& shopOrder online for delivery, or at a Virgin Mobile kiosk. An existing line can be converted to a youth account

With du, or if you just want a cheap prepaid line, the parent buys an ordinary SIM on their own Emirates ID and gives it to the child. It counts towards the parent’s line limit and appears under their name on the regulator’s records.

Turning 18? Ask the operator to transfer ownership of the number to the young person. Both of you attend with your Emirates IDs, and the child keeps the same number. This matters because the number they have used for years is probably already linked to their school and university accounts.

New arrivals usually hit the same snag: banks want a UAE mobile number in your name before they open an account, and you cannot get an Emirates ID-registered line until the ID arrives. Get a prepaid line on your passport on day one and move it across later. Our first 30 days checklist puts these steps in order, and the bank account guide explains why the number matters.

Step by step: buying your first SIM

  1. Choose the operator. e& (formerly Etisalat) and du have the widest coverage. Virgin Mobile runs on du’s network and is app-only, which suits people who want delivery and no shop visit.
  2. Choose prepaid or postpaid. Prepaid needs only ID and has no contract. Postpaid gives better data per dirham but may need salary proof.
  3. Bring the original ID. Photocopies are not accepted; the shop scans the card or the app reads its chip.
  4. Activate. Most lines work within minutes. Postpaid can take a few hours while documents are checked.
  5. Install the operator’s app straight away. It is where you renew registration, top up and change plans.

Rules that catch people out

  • Line limit. Comparison site Giraffy puts the cap at 10 active lines per person across all operators. Businesses that need more use corporate accounts.
  • Registration expires with your Emirates ID. When you renew your visa and ID, update the SIM registration in the app or at a shop. Operators send reminders by text; ignore them and outgoing service is cut.
  • Numbers registered without your knowledge. TDRA’s free Hesabati service lists every mobile and fixed line registered to your Emirates ID. Sign in with UAE Pass from tdra.gov.ae, and if you see a number you do not recognise, click “Make a complaint” or call 800 12. Run this check once a year, and after you lose an ID.
  • Selling or lending your line. Lines registered to you but used by someone else remain your legal responsibility. This is a common route into scams, so never let a stranger register a SIM on your ID. See our UAE scams guide.
  • Leaving the UAE. Do not cancel your number the day you fly. Bank logins still send OTPs to it. Our guide to keeping a UAE SIM alive after you leave covers the cheapest way to do that.
