The headline tuition figure is rarely what a UAE school year costs, and the application window closes earlier than most arriving families expect. This guide covers the timing and the extras — for how fee increases are capped, see Schooling Costs.
Admissions Timeline
When to do what
Most UAE schools run a September–June academic year. Working backwards from a September start:
| When | What to do | Why then |
|---|---|---|
| Oct–Dec the year before | Shortlist schools, book tours, register interest | Popular schools open applications here and fill fastest in the entry years |
| Jan–Mar | Submit applications, sit assessments | Assessment slots are limited and go early |
| Feb–Apr | Offers issued; deposit due to hold the place | Deposit deadlines are short — often days, not weeks |
| Apr–Jun | Complete paperwork, transfer certificate, medical records | Attestation from your home country takes weeks |
| Aug | Uniform, books, transport registration | These bills land together, just before term |
Arriving mid-year? Places do come up as families leave — the UAE has high turnover — but you’ll have less choice and should contact schools directly rather than waiting for an application window.
The costs beyond tuition
Ask about every line below before you compare two schools on tuition alone. Amounts vary widely by school, so get them in writing.
| Cost | Refundable? | Worth asking |
|---|---|---|
| Application / assessment fee | No | Charged per school — applying to five adds up |
| Registration deposit | Usually credited against term one | What happens if you withdraw before term starts? |
| Refundable security deposit | Yes, on proper exit | What’s the notice requirement to get it back? |
| School transport | No | Priced by distance zone; often billed termly |
| Uniform and books | No | Compulsory supplier, or can you buy elsewhere? |
| Trips, exams, extracurriculars | No | Which are compulsory rather than optional? |
The document that settles this: every KHDA-registered school in Dubai must publish a School Fees Fact Sheet listing all mandatory and optional charges. Ask for it by name. A school reluctant to hand it over has told you something useful.
Get the transfer certificate before you leave
UAE schools generally require a transfer certificate from the previous school, and depending on the country of origin it may need attestation. Obtaining and attesting it after you’ve already moved is considerably harder than doing it before — the same problem that catches people with degree certificates.
Collect at the same time: recent school reports, immunisation and medical records, and your child’s passport and visa copies. See Your First 30 Days for how this fits the wider move.
Negotiate the education allowance before you sign
School fees are typically the largest single line in a UAE family budget — often exceeding rent. An education allowance is a normal part of a package for senior roles, and it is far easier to negotiate into an offer than to request a year later.
Two things worth checking: whether it’s paid directly to the school or to you, and whether it’s included in your basic salary or sits outside it. That second point affects your gratuity — see Salary & End of Service.
Common questions
How far ahead should I really apply?
For entry years — the first year of a school’s intake, and Year 7 or equivalent — treat the autumn a full year ahead as the realistic window at sought-after schools. For other year groups there’s usually more flexibility, because turnover creates places throughout the year.
Can I hold places at two schools while deciding?
You can, but each deposit is at risk and the terms differ by school. Before paying a second deposit, ask each one directly what happens if you withdraw and get the answer in writing — “non-refundable” and “refundable up to a date” are very different positions.
What if we leave the UAE mid-year?
Notice requirements are set out in your school contract and are commonly a term. Leaving without giving it can forfeit deposits and complicate obtaining the transfer certificate your next school will need. Give notice in writing as early as you can — see Leaving the UAE.
Does the school’s inspection rating actually matter?
It matters in two ways. It’s a published quality indicator, and in Dubai a school’s rating also affects whether and how much it may raise fees. A high-rated school is not automatically right for your child, but the rating is free, official information and worth reading before a tour rather than after.
Which curriculum should we choose?
The UAE offers British, American, IB, Indian, French and others. The practical question isn’t which is best in the abstract — it’s where you expect your child to continue their education. Switching curriculum mid-schooling is disruptive, so choose for continuity with wherever you might move next.
Last verified August 2026. Admissions timelines, deposit terms and fee structures vary considerably between schools and emirates — the timeline above is a planning guide, not a rule. Confirm dates and charges directly with each school, and check its regulator listing (KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi) for inspection ratings and the published fee fact sheet.
