If you have a child born between September and December, this one is worth reading properly. The UAE has extended the age eligibility cut-off for early years admission from 31 August to 31 December.

What changed

The change applies to admission from pre-kindergarten — foundation stage in the UK curriculum — through to Grade 1, or Year 2. It affects every school whose academic calendar begins in August or September, which is the overwhelming majority.

In practice: a child who previously had to be three by 31 August to join pre-kindergarten can now start at two, provided they turn three by 31 December of that admission year.

Authorities framed it as ensuring fairer access to early education through unified admission criteria, and bringing the UAE into line with international practice.

Who this actually affects

Children born September to December. Under the old rule these children missed the cut-off by weeks and waited a full extra year to start. That gap is now closed.

Families relocating from a country with a different school year. If your child was already in school abroad and the UAE cut-off would have held them back a year, this may change where they land in the year groups. Worth raising directly with your shortlisted schools rather than assuming.

What to do about it

• If you were told your child missed the cut-off, ask again. Advice given before this change may no longer apply.
• Confirm with the specific school, in writing. Implementation timing can vary between schools and emirates, and admissions staff work from their own regulator’s guidance.
• Move quickly if it makes your child eligible this year. Applications for popular schools open around a year ahead, and an extra cohort of eligible children means more competition for the same places.
