Emirates ID Renewal: The AED 20-a-Day Fine and How to Avoid It

Emirates ID renewal is routine right up until it isn’t. Miss the date and you’re paying a daily fine on top of the renewal cost — and the card is what your bank checks before it restricts your account.

What it costs

For expatriate residents, the card fee is commonly reported as AED 100 per year of visa validity, plus a smart services fee of around AED 100 when applying online through the ICP portal or app.

Applying in person at a Customer Happiness Centre may carry a different service fee — ask before paying. Urgent fast-track processing is reported at around AED 150 extra.

The fine

AED 20 per day, capped at AED 1,000. It’s added to your renewal fee and must be cleared before the new card is issued — so you can’t simply pay it later.

At AED 20 a day, the cap is reached in fifty days. A forgotten renewal noticed two months later costs more than a three-year card.

Where sources disagree — and why it matters

Most published guides state a 30-day grace period after expiry, with fines starting only once it closes. At least one specialist site states there is no official grace period and that daily fines begin immediately on expiry.

We can’t reconcile those from published sources, and the difference is AED 600. So the only sensible approach is to treat the expiry date itself as the deadline, not the start of a buffer. Renew before it, and the disagreement becomes irrelevant to you.

Practical points people miss

  • Renew your passport first if it’s close to expiring. Your passport generally needs several months’ validity at the time you submit.
  • Residents can usually apply up to six months early. There’s no advantage in waiting.
  • Children on residency visas need their own cards — easy to overlook when yours is fine.
  • An expired card causes bank problems before it causes visa problems. Banks run KYC checks against it, and an expired ID is the most common trigger for a restricted UAE account.
  • Set a reminder 60 days out, not 30. That leaves room for a passport renewal if you need one.
