“How long does a UAE visa take” doesn’t have one answer, because it’s really five smaller waits stacked together. Here’s what each stage looks like for a standard employer-sponsored employment visa — the most common route.
- Labour card approval — 2–5 working days. Your employer submits this through MOHRE before you travel or convert status.
- Entry permit issuance — 1–3 working days after the labour card clears. This is the document that lets you fly in, or switch from a visit visa without an exit.
- Medical fitness test — same day results, but booking availability varies. Done after arrival (or in-country if converting status); some centres offer same-day appointments, others book out a week or more.
- Emirates ID biometrics — typically within a few days of the medical test, often bundled into the same appointment window.
- Residence visa stamping and Emirates ID card production — 5–10 working days after biometrics, sometimes longer during busy periods.
Add it up and a clean case — no missing documents, no attestation issues, no backlog at your chosen centre — runs about 2–4 weeks from labour card submission to holding a physical Emirates ID. Self-sponsored routes (Golden Visa, Green Visa, freelance visa) follow a similar shape but often start later, since eligibility documents (income proof, degree attestation) need to be gathered and verified before the entry permit stage even begins.
What actually causes delays
- Degree or document attestation not done before applying — this alone can add 2–6 weeks
- Booking bottlenecks at medical fitness centres during peak relocation months (typically August–September and January)
- Incomplete or incorrectly formatted submissions bounced back for correction
Attestation is the one worth planning for well ahead — it has to happen in the country that issued the document, so it’s far easier to sort out before you move than after. See Visas & Residency for the full breakdown by visa type.
