If you don’t want your residency tied to an employer, the UAE gives you two realistic self-sponsored routes: a free zone freelance visa, or a Green Visa. They solve the same problem — independence from a sponsor — but from opposite directions.
Freelance visa (via free zone)
You buy a freelance permit from a free zone (Dubai’s several, plus RAK, Sharjah and others each run their own), which then sponsors your residence visa. No income threshold to qualify — the barrier is the fee, not your earnings. Total first-year cost, including the permit, visa, medical and Emirates ID, commonly runs AED 10,000–25,000 depending on the free zone. Validity typically matches the permit, often 1–2 years, renewable.
Green Visa
A 5-year self-sponsored residency requiring proof of AED 360,000+ in annual income (for the freelance/self-employed route) — no free zone permit purchase needed. Government fees sit in the low thousands of AED, far less than a freelance permit, but you need the income history to qualify in the first place. It’s also available to skilled employees under separate salary criteria, without needing to be self-employed at all.
Which one actually fits
- Just starting out, income not yet at AED 360,000/year: the freelance visa is your only self-sponsored option — you’re paying for access, not proving income.
- Already earning above the threshold: the Green Visa is cheaper year-to-year and lasts five years instead of one or two, so it’s worth the switch once you qualify.
- Want the longest runway with the least renewal admin: Green Visa, for the 5-year validity alone.
Neither route requires an employer, and neither is a permanent choice — freelancers who grow into the income threshold commonly start on the free zone route and move to a Green Visa at renewal.
